How We Support Summit County
Go Red
Each year, the County Executive’s Office coordinates number of events in support of the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women initiative. The Go Red initiative is a nationwide platform designed to increase women’s heart health awareness and serve as a catalyst for change to improve the lives of women globally.
Harvest for Hunger
Summit County officeholders and employees donate funds and food to the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank’s annual Harvest for Hunger campaign. The Harvest for Hunger Campaign is a collaboration between four food banks that collectively serve twenty-one Northeast Ohio communities, and is one of the nation’s largest food drives. One hundred percent of every dollar raised in the campaign goes directly to providing free food for individuals and families in need.
Akron-Summit Holocaust Arts and Writing Contest
Summit County is a proud sponsor of the Akron-Summit Holocaust Arts and Writing Contest. The contest recognizes students in Summit County and abroad for their writing and artistic talents. The contest is available to students in grades 6-12, living in Summit County, as well as students in Kiryat, Israel, Chemnitz, Germany and Weihai, China, Akron’s sister cities.
Laura Williams Dunlop Memorial Stand Down
Since 2016, Summit County and FirstEnergy Foundation have partnered to donate $80,000 to the Laura Williams Dunlop Memorial Stand Down. The Stand Down was founded in 2005 and is an annual day of community-based programming to help local homeless and displaced veterans prepare for the winter months. The veterans receive warm clothing, sleeping bags, gloves, hats and shoes. The veterans also receive medical testing, legal counseling and food cards. Summit County employees also donate items like socks and towels for veterans.
WWII Memorial & Veterans Memorial Plaza
In 2018, the Summit County Executive’s Office led efforts to install the County’s World War II Memorial plaques at the Summit County Courthouse. The plaques, previously displayed on the University of Akron campus, contain 1,534 names of Summit County residents lost in World War II.
In 2019, Executive Shapiro announced plans to create the Summit County Veterans Memorial Plaza outside the County Courthouse, the current home of the recently installed World War II plaques and the World War I Doughboy statue. Memorials from other foreign wars will be installed in the future to create the plaza.
Serving Our Soldiers (SOS)
Each spring, the Summit County Executive’s Office sells flowers to raise money for the Serving Our Soldiers program. The funds raised from the flower sales are used to send holiday care packages to military members serving on active duty.
