COMMUNITIES IN SUMMIT COUNTY Print

The County of Summit was establisted in March of 1840.  It was derived from having the highest elevation along the Ohio Canal.  In 1981, Summit County voted in to become the first county in Ohio to be a charter government.  Instead of three elected commissioners, there is an Executive and eleven members of County Council, eight of which are elected from individual districts and three are at large.  Summit County has appointed a Medical Examiner, an elected Clerk of Courts, Engineer, Fiscal Officer, Prosecutor and Sheriff.
