This is skilled and semi-skilled work in the examination and maintenance of sewers and related structures.

An employee in this class is responsible for the performance of skilled and semi-skilled work in examining sewers and maintaining sewers by unplugging clogged sewers with a variety of equipment and making minor repairs to sewers and related structures.

Works under the supervision of a Sewer Maintenance Foreman; exercises judgment in determining the need for and extent of required repairs.  Assignments often require work inside sewers with attendant hazards.


Graduation from an accredited high school or GED and a minimum of one year of paid experience in sewer system construction, maintenance, repair or sewer maintenance dispatching, or an equivalent combination of paid experience and training.  THE EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT MEANS THAT YOU MAY SUBSTITUTE UP TO 50% OF PAID EXPERIENCE WITH RELATED EDUCATION AND TRAINING.  Possession of a valid State of Ohio commercial driver's license (CDL) Class B with tanker endorsement.

Knowledge of the methods, tools, and materials of sewer construction, maintenance, and repair.  Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of sewer work.  Some knowledge of the City sewer system.

Ability to detect flaws and weaknesses and to estimate extent of sewer repairs required.  Ability to work, walk, and crawl in cramped quarters.  Ability to read, interpret, and scale underground sewer system maps.  Ability to work under adverse conditions of ventilation.  Ability to perform strenuous and hazardous work.  Ability to speak clearly, to deal effectively with the general public and to maintain cooperative relationships.  Ability to drive and operate construction equipment. Preferred Skills

Enters sewers and manholes and walks or crawls through sewer lines to check structural conditions, locate sewer leaks and breaks, and report defective conditions.  Uses confined space safety equipment  to inspect and clean sewer related structures.  Makes minor masonry repairs to sewers and other related structures.  Drives and operates sewer cleaning vehicles to mechanically clean and unclog sewer lines, manholes, inlets and storm headwalls.  Removes blockages from sewers using various debris removal  tools.  Inspects and clean combined sewer overflow racks, inlets, headwalls, and manholes.  Removes sewage from basements occurring as a result of sewer blockages.  Uses dye and/or smoke tests to determine if sewer is broken.  Keeps daily log of work activities. Sets up traffic control safety equipment and secures cave-ins.  Performs other related work as required.
