This is skilled technical work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of telecommunications systems and other electronic equipment.

An employee in this class is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing radio, video, audio and other electronic equipment used in telecommunications.

Works under the general supervision of a Radio Technician exercising considerable independent judgment in carrying out assignments.


Graduation from an accredited high school or GED and a minimum of one year of paid experience in the repair, installation and maintenance of electronic telecommunications equipment and systems. Possession of a valid State of Ohio driver's license.

Some knowledge of the tools, materials, methods, practices, and testing devices used in maintenance, installation and repair of two-way radio and other telecommunications equipment and systems. Knowledge of the principles and theory of radio, receivers and transmitting equipment. Knowledge of modern electronics. Knowledge of first aid for injuries resulting from electrical accidents. Ability to use and care for tools, testing devices and equipment used in the repair, installation and maintenance of radio transmitters, telecommunications equipment and systems.

Ability to diagnose and locate the cause of malfunctions in radio equipment. Ability to repair, install, assemble, and test a variety of radio transmitting, receiving, and other telecommunications equipment. Ability to use personal computers and specialized software used in telecommunications equipment set up and maintenance and file, database and record updating. Ability to interpret and work from technical diagrams and blueprints. Sufficient physical stamina to perform moderately active physical work. Ability to distinguish colors. Ability to safely operate motor vehicles. List of essential job functions available upon request.

Preferred Skills

Diagnoses, repairs and maintains various telecommunications systems and system components such as voice and data radios, multiplexers, audio, video, and LAN/WAN equipment.  Installs, removes and transfers radio communication equipment in and from City vehicles.  Maintains all electronic communications equipment by periodically servicing and repairing all system circuits, receivers and transmitters, using communications service monitors, transmission impairment measurement sets, multimeters, oscilloscope, power meters, and other equipment as needed. Designs, builds, and modifies equipment to meet needs for which equipment is not available on the market.  Assists in adjusting frequency and modulation percentage on all transmitters.  Updates and maintains a variety of manual and computerized records and databases.  Drives to and from sites throughout Summit County in order to diagnose, repair and maintain various radio systems and components.  Performs related work as required.
